Inspiration

Walnut trees are common on the good soils of this area.  As a child, I picked up walnuts to sell in the fall with my mother to make a little extra spending money--actually, we really needed it.  I liked the richness of the wood.  I admired its resistance to the elements.

Mantle with Walnut Leaves

This mantle board is approximately 2.25" inches thick from "found wood."  We found an old log with the sapwood rotted off.  It was "rustic"--but you could say "ugly" too.  Its heart was sound, I discovered, when I had it sawed into slabs. The finished top shelf is the top edge of the board flipped over and matched back to the grain, so the shelf is approximately 4.5 inches wide.
