Relief Carvings

These are relief carvings of several natural scenes available as wall hangings or free standing sculptures.

About Shallow Reliefs

Usually, I trace a photograph on a flat board using carbon paper.  Quickly, I cut a narrow grove with a vee tool to prevent the carbon from smudging.  The carving process then removes wood to expose the "layers" of the subject.  Each layer is only thick enough to provide the needed relief, and undercutting the edges along the boundaries of the edges provides the impression of depth. For carvings like the Big Horned Battle, I use a router to remove excess wood to predetermined depths.  Each layer is about 1/8" thick.

About Deep Relief

These carvings border on "carving in the round."  The front element is close to actual scale while elements in the background are carefully compressed in depth.  The Natural Fisher uses a mirror background to give the impression of water and to enhance the feeling of depth.  Water reeds were burned in with a wood burner after the front layer of wood was routed away.  The bird was glued to the layer of reeds after they were created.
