Carvings of People I Have Known
The carvings below are from photographs of some very special people I have known.
Gurtis and Alida
Gurtis was the local blacksmith in days gone by, an expert in the woods, colorful storyteller, and good neighbor. Alida was the devoted mate and kind friend. They lived the "simple life" shunning electricity and most of the "modern conveniences."
Farmer in Overalls
Gurtis was the model I used to depict a farmer in overalls. I photographed Gurtis in his garden.
Minnie Pearl
While I can't say that I knew Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon personally, I did see her perform live and, like many people, knew her on television very well as Minnie Pearl. And, of course, I know her well because she is from my hometown. I know her family and her background and her culture.
Charlie Garner
The late Charlie Garner was the creator and host of the Grinders Switch Hour on Kix 96.7 each Saturday morning at 10:00. A warm and caring person, Charlie was a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He played for Del Reeves, also of Hickman County, TN, for many years.
