Inspiration

Living in deer country with lots and lots of trees, deer are never far from sight.  With so many trees, deer hide behind trees so often and are obscured.  While carving leaves in front of a deer is challenging, it seemed a worthwhile effort.

Mantle with Deer in the Trees

This mantle board is approximately 3.5 inches thick.  The finished top shelf is the top edge of the board flipped over and matched back to the grain, so the shelf is approximately 7 inches wide.  (The red tint of the top is from lights reflecting from a red wall.  It is nicely finished in its natural golden color.)

Left Side with Buck Deer

A young buck deer, with antlers, hides behind red oak leaves.  The leaves are deeply under cut to appear as real leaves do on a tree branch.

Center with Mill Scene

An old mill sits above a water wheel and stone wall.  Behind the mill is a shed with firewood.  Below is a cellar with door (not seen in this photograph).  Trees carved in relief stand out with wood burning detail--include a child's swing suspended from one limb.
